just as i suspected

i take back this post 100% (well at least 90%) ... i am no good at grad school right now. What happened you might ask - MIDTERMS. i feel lost and confused and frankly, not very bright.

The problem is that i have forgotten how to study - really study - for an exam. You know, multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blanks - straight up knowing the material and not just being able to write some flowery non-sense about the stuff you read. Yeah, well I am so much better at the flowery non-sense than the facts. I get so distracted and tired and I can't focus ... anyone have studying tips?

I hear you, I'd rather write a 10 page paper than do a multiple choice exam. But here are my study tips (most are just tried and true):
1. Flashcards
2. Teach it to someone else (or just sit down and explain it to them)
3. Take notes when reading
4. Repetition, repetition, repetition
5. Give yourself treats. Personally my study treats were Red Bull and Spree but I know that most people find either of those (or definitely the combination) repulsive. So get a slurpee, or make cookies, or have some veggies and dip. I just find treats make studying easier.

Good luck! You're brilliant!

I remember this from a history class at IHS, use SQ3R.
1. Survey what you are about to read: read first and last paragraphs, captions, etc.
2. Using the heading, write down 3 questions that you would liked answered from the reading section even though you haven't read it. For example, the chapter is called WWII. Who was involved in this war? When did this war occur and end? Why did this war begin?
Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you ask because it makes you are pay attention to what you are reading, but do not ask questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no.
3. Read.
4. Recite what you just read. You can do this by rereading outloud the notes you took and/or by summarizing what you have just read and saying that out loud, or teach them to someone else.
5. Review those notes. Repeat the reviews as often as possible. This will help you retain the information.

I know that it sound tedious, but it makes for more efficiently reading and processing, especially with the type of testing you are going to be dealing with.

Remember the more learning styles you use, the more you will retain.

You can do this. It'll be like going back to the mental gym. Your brain has never been out of shape, it just need to polish those skills. :)

Here is a site about SQ3R in case you want more info. http://www.studygs.net/texred2.htm

Wow...who is Mystic Cher? That sounds way intense! I am not one to give advice for studying, but what I always do is rewrite my notes a bunch. And talk outloud to myself (like a crazy, I know!). Im into the hearing and the repitition of writing it--I mean you have to concentrate to write words so your mind cant disengage as much.

With all these and other random tricks (Especially the treats) I bet you will get back into brain shape in a jiffy!
